2024 important beliefs americans share banner

As a small token of appreciation, we’re excited to share our new list, 10 Important Beliefs Most Americans Share. At a time when Americans are feeling so divided, it’s helpful to have a reminder of the values we hold in common. Our differences are important too, and we believe navigating them becomes easier when we are grounded in what unites us.  Each of these points reflects the work we do together — and it’s all possible because of you.

1

Family and Connection

Spending time with loved ones, whether biological or chosen, is a top priority for most Americans. These connections sustain us through tough times, both personally and in our work. People with warm, supportive relationships live longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives compared to those who are more isolated.

2

Reducing Division

Division is a major concern: 93% of Americans feel reducing divisiveness is important, with two-thirds believing it’s very important.

3

Common Ground

71% of Americans believe we have more in common than what divides us. It’s easier to see when we step outside our bubbles.

4

Government Accountability

90% of Democrats and 89% of Republicans believe Government must be accountable to the people. As a matter of fact, 9 in 10 Democrats and Republicans agree on six key values, including fairness, accountability, and respect. Despite these shared beliefs, most people don’t realize they have common ground.

5

Flourishing Families

Voices from across the political spectrum agree that in order for a family to flourish, their essential needs should be met; they should have family and community connectedness; they are equipped to overcome obstacles and setbacks; and they have autonomy to make childrearing decisions that align with their values.

6

Citizen Participation

76% of Americans believe citizen involvement is crucial for solving our community and national issues—something Convergence works to foster every day.

7

Firearms Views

Nearly 70% of Americans support funding community-based gun violence prevention programs. This highlights a motivation amongst American communities to work out solutions together.

8

Respect and Compassion

Democrats and Republicans each believe that only about one-third of the opposing side values “respect and compassion across differences.” However, the reality is that 9 in 10 Americans—regardless of political affiliation—hold respect and compassion as core values.

9

Positive View on Immigration

Despite concerns, two-thirds of Americans see immigration as a positive for the country. What could that mean for our future?

10

The American Dream

7 in 10 Americans say they’ve achieved or are on their way to achieving the American Dream. Does that resonate with you?
